Areas of responsibility

The Senior Exposure Scientist should have a master’s or doctoral degree in a science discipline, or environmental science/engineering, or related disciplines, with experience in industrial hygiene, or equivalent industrial experience as an exposure scientist. The successful applicant would need to have multidisciplinary skills in chemistry, toxicology, environmental modelling, and industrial hygiene. The successful candidate will need to be competent to provide expert exposure science advice, including risk management solutions and practical assessment of exposure for health and environmental hazards. Influence stakeholders and clients of Penman Consulting Ltd., and act as a partner to Penman Consulting clients in the delivery of human and environmental exposure assessments as part of the wider risk assessment process.

These permanent roles will be flexible and will adapt to the skills of the job holder allowing significant scope for further development arising from the growth of the business. We are open to homebased work, however regular attendance will be required at our offices in Oxfordshire, UK or in Brussels, Belgium.

The major focus will be on supporting the work Penman Consulting does in supporting its Clients with innovative approaches to meeting their needs for exposure assessments as part of the regulatory risk assessment process.

The successful candidates will work within a multidisciplinary team with exposure scientists, project managers, regulatory specialists, toxicologists, environmental scientists, and IT specialists.

Both positions will emphasise the need for continued professional development and candidates will be expected to continue learning with an emphasis on exposure science and global regulatory developments. This will be through, selflearning and mentoring programmes, attendance of external courses and scientific meetings for approximately 1020 % of the jobholder’s overall time as agreed with their mentor and in line with Company policy.

Additional Job Requirements

  • Knowledge of indoor air quality management systems (e.g., mechanical ventilation systems, air cleaning systems), and chemicals (including sampling, laboratory analysis, and data
    analysis)
  • Knowledge of mammalian toxicology, ecotoxicology and workplace and environmental modelling
  • In depth knowledge of EU based exposure models and platforms. These include for example the ECETOC TRA models, EUSES, Cons Expo, Stoffenmanager, Chesar and ART.
  • Working knowledge of USEPA exposure models such as EPA’s Consumer Exposure Model (CEM) and also EPA’s EFAST model
  • Good mathematical skills
  • A capacity for systems thinking and working with multiple stakeholders in industrial and regulatory settings.
  • Expert/Experience with Global/EU REACH chemicals regulation.
  • Excellent organisational, analytical, interpersonal, and communication (written and oral) skills
  • The ability to work in a fastpaced environment and to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Be comfortable working in the English language, and other languages are advantageous
  • Be eligible to work in the EU or UK.

Place of Work

Remote working in Belgium is possible, however regular travel to the Brussels and Oxford (UK) offices will be required.
