An Van Rompay

Principal Toxicologist

An Van Rompay has over 15 years’ experience as Scientific and Regulatory Toxicology Manager, with a background in chemistry. She is an Eurotox Registered Toxicologist (ERT) and obtained a PhD in Molecular Biology at the Karolinska Institute (Sweden), a MSc in Experimental Virology at Karolinska Institute and MSc in Industrial Sciences in Chemistry at Karel De Grote Hogeschool (Belgium).

In February 2020, An has joined Penman Consulting. She provides principal leadership to Consortia and Clients. She manages and provides toxicological input into projects. Act as Study Monitor for studies placed at CRO’s. Work closely with team members.

Prior to joining Penman Consulting, at VITO NV, An was Manager, Consultant and Study Director for in vitro toxicity tests for companies, associations and for decision-making bodies at the European level. All this on the topic of human safety testing, and this according to relevant legislations like REACH, CLP, Detergent and Cosmetics Regulations. She is an expert in multiple in vitro toxicology tests from genotoxicity to topical applications (skin and eye). She oversaw the technical teams performing the scientific assays for customers, ensuring high quality performance, GLP compliance and timely reporting. She has experience in International toxicology project management (team, planning, budget, reporting), strategy development, validation of methods and networking.

Before joining VITO NV, she worked as post-doctoral researcher at University of Antwerp, she has led a project in the kidney-and liver research, to identify the role of inflammatory cells in acute renal failure and kidney transplants.

Furthermore, she is steering committee member of BelTox, INVITROM and RE-Place. And she is Belgian nominated expert at OECD Expert Group on Skin and Eye irritation/corrosion. She is a member of ESTIV.

Outside of work, An enjoys spending time with family and friends, photography, pottering in the garden, and last but for sure not least to be daily executive officer of Sahaya International.eu, an European-based non-profit that supports health, education, economic and environmental programs in India. www.sahaya.eu or www.sahaya.org (USA).
