Digital Product Passports Explained: What Product Passports Mean for Chemical Data
Key takeaways
Digital Product Passports (DPPs) are now live. The EU DPP Registry launched on 20 July 2026. The first mandatory passports, for certain batteries, apply from 18 February 2027.
Most chemical companies won't publish a passport, but they will supply the data behind one. Downstream customers will ask suppliers for substance and composition data. Detergent manufacturers are the exception: they need passports of their own.
A Digital Material Passport (DMP) is how suppliers can answer those requests. It gives every customer one consistent, governed dataset instead of a stream of one-off answers.
Publishing a passport is not the same as governing the data in it. Once a passport is public, any inconsistency between your SDS, SCIP and REACH data is public too.
